How to Pay Import Taxes When Importing Goods from Abroad?

    JUL 01, 2025

Nowadays, E-Commerce plays an increasingly important role, making it easier to order products from abroad. Whether it's clothing, cosmetics, bags, shoes, or any other goods, it's now possible to order directly without going through pre-order stores, which might cause concerns about being scammed. However, one important thing to keep in mind when ordering from abroad is the import tax, which must be paid when goods enter Thailand. Therefore, CPLINTER provides some helpful insights on import taxes, how much tax needs to be paid, and which goods are subject to import taxes when importing from abroad.

####Import Tax Import tax is the tax that must be paid when sending goods from abroad or ordering items from foreign websites. If the value of the goods exceeds 1,500 THB, import tax must be paid to bring the goods into Thailand. However, if the value is below this threshold, no import tax is required.

    Goods Subject to Import Tax

30% Tax: Cosmetics, hats, perfumes, shoes, blankets, umbrellas

    20% Tax: Bags

10% Tax: CDs, DVDs, albums, power banks, headphones, earphones, dolls

    5% Tax: Watches, eyeglasses, sunglasses

Goods Exempted from Import Tax but Subject to VAT (7%): Magazines, photobooks, computer keyboards, and mice

Goods That Are Exempt from Import Tax:

    • Personal items brought into Thailand with a value of less than 10,000 THB
    • Duty-free goods with a value of less than 20,000 THB
    • Cigarettes under 200 sticks or tobacco under 250 grams
    • Alcoholic beverages with a volume of less than 1 liter
    How to Calculate Import Tax:

If the value of the goods exceeds 1,500 THB, you will need to pay import tax and VAT. The calculation involves two types of taxes: Import Tax: This depends on the type of product and can be calculated using the following formula:

[Product cost + shipping cost + insurance (if any)] × Import tax rate (%) = Import Tax

Value Added Tax (VAT): 7% tax can be calculated as:

[Product cost + shipping cost + insurance (if any) + Import Tax] × VAT 7% = VAT

Example: If you import a bag from abroad with a total value of 3,000 THB (including shipping), the tax on bags is 20%. Here’s how to calculate the taxes:

    Import Tax: 3,000 THB × 20% = 600 THB

    VAT: (3,000 THB + 600 THB) × 7% = 252 THB

Total Tax: 600 THB (import tax) + 252 THB (VAT) = 852 THB
